Offshore Wind Region Husum / Schleswig-Holstein

The Region of Husum / Schleswig-Holstein

Husum is the capital of Nordfriesland, situated in the northwest part of Schleswig-Holstein and therefore of Germany as well. In the field of renewable energy - particularly wind power - the region plays a leading role in Germany.

The most important Wind Fair in the world the HUSUMwind is held in Husum. Many companies, such as the large producers of wind power stations Vestas and REpower have settled in Husum. In this region more than 2.000 employees are working in this growing industry. Qualified personnel are trained at the Education Centre for Renewable Energy in Husum.

The development of Offshore Wind Parks will further strengthen the wind power business in Nordfriesland. Against this background and in view of the increasing export of larger wind power stations there are plans for extending the harbour in Husum to meet the growing demand.

The windcomm network agency for wind energy

windcomm is the partner for businesses dealing with wind power and other renewable energies, including those in the maritime sector, educational institutions, universities and associations. This network for Schleswig-Holstein particularly brings together and coordinates existing competence in the wind power and renewable energies sector. As an independent public organisation, windcomm organises regular meetings for representatives of the wind power sector, to find new partners more quickly and exchange ideas about plans and the trends for tomorrow at an early stage.

The regional wind energy sector

On Schleswig-Holstein’s west coast, especially in Husum, a unique concentration of businesses and institutions of the windpower sector has developed. These include manufacturers of wind turbines (REpower, Vestas), service agencies and suppliers, the international trade fair HUSUMwind and the BZEE (Further Training Centre for Renewable Energies).

Beyond these businesses, there is a newly founded centre of competence for wind energy at the University of Flensburg. The main activity will be the cooperation of all Universities and Universities of Applied Science in the field of wind energy research. The BZEE is carrying out a special education program for wind-energy-service-technicians, with nearly 120 students per year. An expansion to the offshore-field is in the planning stage.

In future Husum will be the nerve-centre for the component production as well as for servicing and maintenance work for the planned offshore windfarms. The direct proximity of the North Sea and the harbour sites exclusively available make Husum particularly interesting for component production, for example for rotor blades and nacelles. The weight and size of the objects requires direct proximity to the shipment harbour. Even the wind turbine manufacturers indicate that everything points to Husum as the servicing location. For this the Husum harbour will be extended to meet the necessary requirements.

Businesses in Husum / Schleswig-Holstein

Approximately 200 enterprises specified in wind energy with more than 4.500 employees are located in Schleswig-Holstein, with a clear concentration in the region of Husum. The following enterprises are key companies especially concerning the offshore wind sector:

  • Vestas Central Europe: Wind turbine manufacturer with great experience in installing Offshore windfarms (installed Horns Rev windfarm and planned for the Butendiek-windfarm)

  • REpower Systems: Wind turbine manufacturer, developed the 5 MW – windturbine for the offshore use

  • Offshore Windfarm Butendiek: Planning and operating company of the first german offshore windfarm with 80 3-MW-windturbines, includes regional investments ("citizen-windfarm")

A list of regional windenergy companies exists at the windcomm network agency.

Key institutions in research and education

  • Competence centre for wind energy: newly founded institution at the University of Flensburg, cooperation of all Universities in Schleswig-Holstein regarding windenergy researches

  • Further Training Centre for Renewable Energies: carrying out special education programs for windenergy-service-technicians, in the future also for the offshore-field
